I downloaded the 0.46 version through Desura and was unable to play. I found that renaming the extracted folder from "Towns 2" to "Towns2" (just removed the space) the game launched normally. I hope this helps others.

im getting a different error, here is what it looks like on terminal:

****'s-MacBook-Air:~*********$ /Users/*********/Downloads/Towns\ 2/towns.command ; exit;
usage: dirname path
Unable to access jarfile lib/xaos.jar
logout

[Process completed]

can this be fixed? if so, how?

I have no Mac, but I would read the post above yours,
because it seems like the same problem^^

Sounds like there may be a need for quoting the results of the 'dirname' command - and possibly quoting the 'path' parameter of the 'dirname' command as well...

Just to know, can you go to that folder using a terminal (********$ /Users/*********/Downloads/Towns\ 2/) and then manually launch the towns.command

So, as the JavaPreferences.app was removed with the last Mac OS update, the afore mentioned method to change the java version no longer works.

Fortunately, I found a way around it:

You can specify the path to java in towns.command directly:

Code: Select all
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6/Home/bin/java -Djava.library.path=lib/native/ -Djna.library.path=lib/native/ -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -Xss2048k -jar lib/xaos.jar

Just wanted to thank you, this is the only thing that seemed to fix my problem. I had just installed the JDK 7 the other day to do some development on my MAC and I'm guessing somehow that pulled down the 1.7 JRE, I tried all the other fixes but the only thing that worked was specifying the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6/Home/bin/java in the command file.

There is actually an option (-version:"1.6*") to the java command that allows you to specify what version is needed...

See the Java application launcher

Great, good news.

And my fault, we use Java 1.6 to compile :)

Came to say that this fixed the problem of Towns crashing on launch after first installing for me. One thing I would add is that you can find your Java Preferences by opening a new Finder window and typing "java pref" in the search bar or by navigating to Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences. I believe the default settings has Java SE 6 as the 2nd on the list and you just need to move it up to the top.

i had the exact same problem.
i renamed the folder to get rid of the space in the foldername and it worked fine
towns 2 became towns2
